No More Homeless Pets In Utah

Betsy's Promise

My name is Betsy and this is my story. Ten years ago, I was abandoned and found wandering the streets of the Midwest. My fur was dirty and matted and I was very hungry. Two caring people traveling through the area found me and brought me to Utah. I went into an adoption rescue program. But I guess I wasn't exactly the pick of the litter. In fact, I was adopted four separate times and returned for one reason or another. Finally, my foster mom, Cindy Powell, said that was enough and decided to adopt me.

Before Cindy took me home for the very last time, she made her friends Gregory and Julie Castle promise to take me if anything ever happened to her. Gregory and Julie agreed never expecting anything bad to happen to Cindy.

I loved Cindy. She treated me like a queen. Then a very sad day came. Cindy passed away at the young age of 45. No one was prepared, least of all me. Everyone who knew Cindy and her wonderful work for animals was sad but Gregory and Julie made good on their promise - I have been with them ever since.

It wasn't long after that day that Gregory and Julie made another promise - to help all of Utah's pets find warm and loving homes. That was in 1994 and the Castles along with several Best Friends Animal Society members decided they needed to work with other people saving animals so they started creating special adoption events and spay/neuter programs. This is when No More Homeless Pets in Utah began.

The mission of No More Homeless Pets in Utah is to end the euthanasia of homeless dogs and cats statewide and promote humane alternatives for feral cats. When No More Homeless Pets in Utah started in 2000, 46,000 animals were euthanized each year in Utah shelters. Now, 10 years later, that number has dropped to 35,500.
